2009 Rich List gets the credit crunch treatment.

At a time when everyone is watching what they spend and being more cautious than in previous years, the news that Britain’s richest have seen their fortunes slashed is unlikely to get much sympathy from the general public.

The Sunday Times’ Rich List shows that whilst on paper there are still huge fortunes knocking around, the credit crunch has seen a collective £155 billion wiped off the fortunes of the mega-rich.

Whether being down to their last £100 million or so will force our much-loved celebrities to curb their lifestyles remains to be seen. England footballer Steven Gerrard is reported to have built a gym on his property last year that was so large that it was given its own postcode.
