Neighbourhood: Do you know who your neighbours are?

Richard Catlin
07 December 2009

According to research revealed last week by a leading housing provider, one in three under 25's don't even know the names of their neighbours. This number improves amongst older residents, but it's still a surprising statistic.

At the same time, a survey by Abbey Mortgages found that as many as 95,000 people have moved home since 2007 because they couldn't resolve differences with their neighbours.

You can't really tell what your neighbours are going to be like until you actually move to a new area. But you can get a good idea of how people within any given postcode are rated across a wide range of indicators on checkmyfile.com - completely for free.

Simply type in any UK postcode and we'll show you, amongst other things:

  • What the average credit rating is like, compared to your own.
  • What the average family make-up is like - is it mostly young couples with small children or older, retired people?
  • What the average level of education is.
  • What the main ethnic origin is.
  • How the 'social classification' looks and what it actually means.
  • What the average type of housing is in the local area, and the actual prices that different properties have sold for recently, including whether it's an upward or downward trend.
  • Whether there is an increased risk of identity theft in the area.

We've also listed a selection of 'celebrity postcodes', so that you can compare how you rate compared to them. Check out what the view of your house is like from Space too - and again see how it racks up against celebs' like Simon Cowell.

Whilst you're having a good nose around, check out how the people on your Christmas card list are rated as you tick them off. You might find that your boastful distant relative isn't quite as posh as they'd like to think they are. You can check as many postcodes as you like, instantly, for free and completely anonymously.
