Do cheap houses mean a low postcode rating?

Despite being given the dubious award of having the ‘cheapest street in Britain’ for the second successive year, it’s not all bad news for residents of Fernhill in Mountain Ash, Wales.

Although most of the “20 cheapest streets in England and Wales” are also classified as having a below-average credit rating, Fernhill bucks the trend and is actually rated at slightly above the national average.

Postcodes – and how they are rated – influence a large number of things other than house prices. From the amount of junk mail that you get sent, your insurance premium and your pension, where you live can make a big difference.

Using the free Postcode Check Service on checkmyfile, you can find out a whole host of information. For instance, you can check out the social classification of residents in the postcode area, what types of jobs they do, and what different types of housing cost. You’ll also be able see what the area looks like from the Google satellite – in Fenhill’s case, some very green Welsh valleys.

You can check any UK postcode instantly and anonymously, completely for free. There’s no limit on the number of postcodes you can look up or compare, and there are even a few celebrity examples listed, should you be interested in seeing how others live.

If for any reason you think that your postcode’s classification is way off the mark, we even give you the opportunity to send feedback, which we will in turn pass on to the data owners.
