The things that lenders can check and you can't

There are several things that a lender can find out about you that are not included in your credit report.

This is because you have the right to know what information is being used to assess you for credit, under section 158 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 and under section 7 of the Data Protection Act 1998, but you have absolutely no right to see what is being held about you on fraud prevention databases.

For some odd, unknown and long buried historic reason, your credit report does show two types of fraud warnings registered at CIFAS – the UK’s Fraud Prevention Service – but these relate to those warnings that you put on yourself if you find yourself a victim of impersonation, or one put on by a lender if impersonation theft is discovered. All other types of fraud warnings are seen by the members of CIFAS but are completely invisible to you and me.

CIFAS is relatively transparent compared to other fraud databases. There are those like Hunter, operated by MCL Systems, a division of Experian, that compares every single detail of what is submitted is in a current credit application to what has been said in previous applications to other lenders. Try to exaggerate your salary, and wham! They’ll know about it. Hunter is just one of many fraud databases in use.

God fearing normal consumers should have nothing to worry about. In fact, preventing credit fraud by using these World class databases will reduce the cost of credit for all of us.

You can see what the law entitles you to see by obtaining a Multi Agency Credit Report from checkmyfile.
