Keeping a low profile

Ever wondered how to lower your public profile? Or wanted to reduce the proliferation of your name, address and email details from going viral? Here’s how to start:

Use the Mailing Preference Service, Telephone Preference Service, Fax Preference Service and Email Preference Service to reduce the extent that your name can appear on marketing databases.

Remove your details from web based public directory services such as 192.com – click here to download a form that you will need to complete and then mail back to them.

Get hold of your local Electoral Registation Officer and opt-out of allowing the voters roll to be sold to any third party. You can sometimes do this online – check your local authority website first.

Go ex-directory.

Close down your social media profiles (Facebook Twitter, LinkedIn, and open them up again but not in your real name.

Use a service address rather than your home address on official registers, such as Companies House. This is entirely lawful. You can get a service address very inexpensively from ScanMyPost which also will scan all mail sent to your service address, email you to alert you to view the contents online.

This is exactly the advice we give to identity fraud victims. You can download the Kindle version of our industry acclaimed Identity Theft handbook which contains this and much more about keeping a much lower profile.
