Tesco Online Grocery List Disappears

After well over 10 years of using Tesco’s online grocery service, all of sudden, all of my Tesco order history has disappeared, alongside all the information stored in My Favourites – purchases made in-store and online over the past 13 months, My Usuals, and My Shopping Lists.

At first you might think this just an inconvenience. It takes only an hour or so to set out a completely new shopping list which hopefully will then populate the Tesco Grocery databases. But what has happened to that data? Has it been inadvertently deleted by some random bug in a program designed to give consumers the ability to delete the data held about them by Tesco? Probably not so, as the usual name, address and credit card details are still there.

Could it be that the data has been subject to a criminal or malicious act? Hacked, or stolen perhaps? Unlikely, given the nature of the data. A shopping list is hardly sensitive data.

Tesco is unable to give any explanation. The advice given was simply to delete the App and re-install it. The usual switch it off and plug it back in again fall-back. That failed to bring the data back of course.

The loss of data at Tesco serves to remind us that we all have huge amounts of data held by others. Things happen to that data from time to time which are not always fully understood or explained.

In the case of Tesco Grocery data, the consequences to the consumer are minor. But if something similar happened to your credit data or to your health records, the matter would be far more serious. Errors on credit reports are rare, but do happen from time to time and need help to resolve. We can provide that help when necessary.

The consequences to Tesco are a loss of trust that the data is being held as carefully as expected, resulting in loss of custom. I’ve switched allegiances to Sainsbury’s. They even gave me a £20 discount as a first time user.

Are linked addresses on your credit file a bad thing

Your Credit Report can surprise you: it can include reference to an address you have long-forgotten about or sometimes even an address you have never heard of, which is one of the reasons it’s important to check in every now and then.
