The benefits of using biometrics over passwords

They’re worth considering over traditional passwords.

It’s safe to say most people will have forgotten a password at some point. It’s common to juggle a small mountain of login details just to get through everyday tasks like online banking or shopping.

And while passwords have been the standard way of proving who we are online for years, they’re not perfect. They can be guessed, stolen, reused, or simply forgotten at the worst possible moment.

That’s where biometrics come in. If you’ve ever unlocked your phone with your fingerprint or Face ID, you’ve used biometric authentication.

Let’s look at what biometrics are, how they work, and why they’re often more secure and easier to use than traditional passwords.

What are biometrics?

Biometrics are unique physical or behavioural traits that can be used to verify your identity. These could include:

  • Your fingerprint.

  • Your face.

  • Your voice.

Most of the time, you’ll encounter biometrics in the form of fingerprint scanning or facial recognition (face and touch ID), especially on phones, tablets, and newer laptops.

The key thing to remember is your biometric data is unique to you. No one else has your fingerprint, your exact facial structure, or your eye pattern. That’s what makes it so powerful for security.

Why biometrics are more secure than passwords

Passwords can be secure – but only when used well. They were never designed for the number of accounts we now manage, and the issue is that reused or predictable passwords can leave you vulnerable to fraudulent activity.

Biometrics avoid many of these problems:

1. Biometrics are unlikely to be guessed or easily stolen

A cybercriminal can crack predictable passwords by using the right tools and/or exploiting personal data leaks. What they can’t do is copy your fingerprint from thin air.

It’s much more difficult for a fraudster to mimic your face or steal your iris than it is to steal a typed password.

2. Biometrics reduce the risk of phishing

Phishing scams – where scammers trick you into revealing personal information – rely on asking for passwords, for example by redirecting you to a false login page or receiving fake emails from ‘support.’

Biometrics can’t typically be entered virtually – you have to be physically present to utilise them. That extra layer of protection can prevent fraud before it begins.

3. Your biometric data doesn’t leave your device

Most modern devices store biometric data securely within something called a secure enclave – a protected area of your phone or laptop that even the manufacturer can’t access. That means:

  • Your fingerprint isn’t sent to apps.

  • Your face scan isn’t uploaded to the cloud.

  • Your biometric information stays with you.

This makes it extremely difficult for fraudsters to intercept or misuse.

How biometrics are quicker for logging in

Instant access with no typing

With biometrics, you can unlock your device, approve payments, or log into apps in a matter of seconds – usually with just a glance or a tap at your phone. It’s effortless and you don’t need to memorise anything.

No need to manage login details

There’s no need to juggle multiple passwords or use password vaults – with biometrics, it’s the same across the board.

Good for accessibility

For anyone who struggles with seeing and entering obscure characters in a CAPTCHA, biometrics removes a major barrier and makes it straightforward to sign in.

What biometrics mean for your online safety

  • Stronger ID checks

Even if a fraudster obtains one of your devices, they’d still struggle to unlock it without touch or face ID.

  • Better protection for financial accounts

Most online banking and finance apps now use biometrics in preference of traditional passwords. Even if someone knows your username and password, they’re unlikely to be able to get your biometrics.

Don't forget your credit report

Monitoring your credit report regularly is one of the best ways to keep an eye out for signs of fraud. At Checkmyfile, we provide the most detailed credit report you can get. It’s got your information from the UK’s three main credit reference agencies – Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion – in one place. And if something doesn’t look right, our UK-based customer care team is here to help. Start with a 7-day free trial. It’s then £14.99 a month – cancel online anytime.

Wrapping up

Biometrics offer a good balance between stronger security and everyday convenience. They can be quick, easy, and help protect your accounts in a way that passwords can’t.

As more services move toward biometric authentication, it may be worth considering as a way of keeping your online accounts safe – including your credit information.
