Password security service gets hacked, loses data

The latest organisation to fall victim to hackers, hungry for consumer’s passwords is, ironically, a password-storing company.

LastPass is software that securely remembers your passwords so that you don’t have to. You install a piece of software, add a ‘master’ password and hey presto, a really secure password string without having to remember it, or create dozens of different variations for different sites and services.

It doesn’t take a genius to work out why hackers would want to hack a service like this does it? Obviously, the nature of their business means that LassPass has very rigorous security protocols in place, that place a massive amount of encryption on the information it stores.

Unfortunately, that’s not the sort of thing to deter a hacker. In many cases, quite the opposite.

In a post on its official blog, LastPass admitted that it had been targeted, and that some information had been compromised, including email addresses and password reminders. It said that there was ‘no evidence’ to suggest that user accounts were accessed, or that data was taken from its secure vault.

As in most cases like this, the company has erred on the side of caution and contacted its users with advice on the steps they should take, which includes changing their master passwords. In cases where the same master password was used on other sites, users are being advised to change those too.

It’s a damaging episode for a company that is so dependent on security, regardless of the information – or lack of even – that was compromised in the attack.

It’s unlikely that criminals would be able to steal an identity with the sort of data they would have garnered, and with any luck, the incident will mean nothing more to LastPass users than the inconvenience of changing passwords.
